Alex Moriarty Memorial Scholarship
Alex Moriarty Memorial Scholarship
Alex was a talented young man that joined the Salesian community as a junior honor roll student. He played a key role on Salesian’s first ever CIF Basketball Championship team in 2020, in which he was named California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) player of the year. Later that summer and during our COVID closure, Alex and his family learned the terrible news that he had glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The Salesian community worked with Alex’s family to take a year off from school for Alex’s aggressive treatment. He returned in the Fall of 2021 to complete his senior year at Salesian. He even earned a CIF waiver to compete on the basketball team in his fifth year of eligibility. As a well-respected and talented young man, he was welcomed with open arms to a new senior class and was selected by his peers to give a speech at the Senior Farewell during the 2022 Salesian graduation ceremonies.
Having graduated from Salesian High School with a 4.13 gpa, Alex enrolled at UCLA and worked as a student manager for the UCLA basketball team, before receiving the news of the return of his medical condition. Alex passed away peacefully in March of 2024.
Recognizing the immense leadership and talents that Alex brought to Salesian High School, a memorial scholarship fund has been established that will assist transfer student families with affording their dream of a Salesian education.
